trans is from 87 firebird. I have an 89. my speedo is electronic, the trans needs a speedo cable. What are my options? The speedo cable is only 5 bucks so its not bad, but im more thinking of what i can do to go from the speedo cable then to my electronic speedo.

All you need is the vss. The calbe drive cames out and can be replace with vss. I know because I have 87 camaro which was cable driven. but I but in a dash from a 90 camaro which is electric operated speedo. If I go over to the grage tonight I will get you the part number for it.

It's just the black plastic housing the cable is attached to. You take out the one 10mm bolt, and pull the piece straight out. There should be enough room to do it without removing anything first. The VSS is shaped exactly like it on the side that goes into the tranny, just with an electrical connector on the outside instead of a threaded nipple. Just make sure the gear color is the same as what you're taking out.

Actually, the VSS is quite a bit larger than the cable drive unit. Here is a picture of a VSS installed in my tranny with the connector attached: http://www.geocities.com/motorcity/g...oconnector.jpg

The hole diameter in the trans is the same whether it's an electronic VSS or the mechanical cable connection piece. Either type will fit in the trans speedo drive gear access hole.
