Help me wire my fuel gauge!

The car is an 89 Firebird
was a 305 TBI, now a 350 carb.
I had to re-wire the fuel pump, and in the process, the guage is pegged over-full
now I use an external pump, so there is NOTHING hooked up at the tank at all.
From what I remember, there are 3 wires, which would be ground, fuel pump, and sender.
So what do I have to do?
the wires are disconnected from the body harness, so its basically just 3 wires coming out of the fuel pump sending unit.
Which wire to I have to hook the battery up to? The pump or the sender, or do I just have to ground the ground wire to the body, and re-hook the fuel level sender back to the body harness?
