HO Alternator
HO Alternator
About how much should I expect to pay to have a high output alternator built at an alternator shop? What kind of voltages do i have to choose from? It's an 89 IROC and I wan't some more amperage to power the thing.

$160-180 for a 140amp alt. Voltage stays the same at aroudn 13.8-14.2. I payed for one and it broke and almost killed me on the highway when it was dark out, raining, in the mountain tunnel on the penn interstate where there where nothing but trucks going 90 and NO PLACE TO PULL OVER, Jersey dividers on both sides of me. My baby got me to a safe emergency pull over so I was okay for a while. Still I wish I had gotten my money back from it, instead I have a heavy paper weight. One way to check if you've gotten a true 140amp alt. is to turn everything and with a DC (not AC) amp clamp measure the amps. There aren't too many DC clamps out there because it's usually just a tool for the high wire guys but they do make a DC version and I've used it. It read 143 max amps so I was happy until the break down in the middle on nowhere. I'm back to a stock 100amp and I can't tell the difference. Make sure you battery is good because that has a lot to do with your alt. life.
