high beams work, low beams don't. what could be wrong?
A while back I turned my lights on and the low beams came on. But it was during the night so I switch it to high beam and went on my way. As I was driving down the road I noticed a car up ahead so I went to turn my lights to low beam, and I was in complete darkness outside, the only light shining was my turn signals. So I thought fast and turned my one fog light on, and that helped a little so that I could see. But I need my low beams back. I thought maybe the fuse was out, but I couldn't find a low beam fuse in the fuse panel. So I'm wondering what else could be wrong. Everything else works fine, except for the low beams. Any ideas?

Sounds like the hi/low beam switch on the column.
Ed, head light relay? The only relay in the lighting system is the fog light relay, which turns off the fog lights when the high beams are powered; correct?

I don't think it is the colomn switch because that would click. If it didn't work then he wouldn't be able to turn his highs on either, he hasn't told us if they work or not. As for the headlights burning out at the same time....that is hard to believe unless the wire from the headlight switch to relay got shorted out. If that happened I think none of the headlights work. I wish people would just invest the time and $20 for a multimeter to figure out the problems. The multimeter would help you so much, you would only need to take off the connection to the headlight and stick the two prongs in and turn your head lights on. If 12 or -12 then it's the headlamp that easy. If not then you go to the next problem and take off the the connector to the relay (on the firewall) and test for current (musical resistance test
), if tone is heard then wire is working. Next is the relay, when you turn your headlights on listen for the relay to flip, if you don't hear it then that is your problem. If that isn't then you're going to have to get deep into the dash with the headlight switch and the connections on the back of the steering column, make sure it's all connected and the lever is pulling the high beam switch. The switch is the biggest pain in the butt to replace because the connector on the back is holding onto 7 or 8 wires, it's a PITA. I hope you go out and get a multimeter, it's the smartest tool and isn't hard to understand, I taught myself.

Dale Earnhart, you have done so much, you will be missed.

I have a multimeter and know how to use it. My high beams work, and they go off when I switch to low beam. I just think that it would be unlikely for both bulbs to go out at the same time.

If all 4 bulbs come on when the hi/low switch is in the high beam position, then it is most likely the hi/low beam switch. Again, the relay controls the fog lights - it turns them off when the high beams are illuminated.

well wonders never sease, it was the bulbs that were burnt out. I checked the voltage at them and it was at 12 volts so I knew that it had to be the bulb. replaced them and everything works fine now.
