How do I disassemble to alternator?
How do I disassemble to alternator?
The title should read: "How do I disassemble THE alternator?" Sorry for the typo.
I've got an alternator off of an 89 GTA and I want to take it apart and rebuild it, bead blast it and generally pretty it up. I've got the case apart but I seem to figure our how to remove the stator coils. There's a plastic ring that looks like a dust shield and it blocks the screws. Any tips or suggestions?
Thanks,
Roy

I had the same problem when i tried to repare the damn thing. I just gave up and traded it in on a new one. I dont think u can get at the screws with out a special tool or something.

To remove the stator from the alternator, you will have to remove the three wires connected to the rectifier.
I unsoldered them and removed the crimp, so I had the same length of solid wire to work with when installing the new rectifier.
It's probably more common to just snip off these wires close to the receifier, and then re-clamp them to the new rectifier.
The "Iceburg" alternator rebuilding/upgrading kit I used had some extenders about an inch long. One side was to be crimpted (and preferably soldered too) to the solid stator wire with the other side just a pin, intended for the rectifier to crimp onto.
Once these three wires are removed the stator will easily lift out.
First time is always hardest...
