Alternator overcharging sometimes
Hey guys help me figure this one out. Replaced the alternator in the IROC, (305 TPI) and here's the problem. Sometimes everything will be normal, then all of a sudden my alternator will be putting out almost 17 volts!
I'm thinking the problem is in the wiring. Could it be a bad negative battery cable, bad voltGE input wire to the alternator? Any ideas where to start and check?
TIA

you should check grounds and wires first, but it sounds more like the voltage regulator in the alt. is bad. i could be wrong but it sounds like you should take that back out and have it tested if you dont have a bad ground

When I first picked up the car I had this problem. Thought it was the alternator so I replaced it. That one was dead, so I replaced it again with the present one.

i got the wiring diag. for a tpi bird here but it should be the same
coming out if your alt there should be a two wire conection. one brown that goes to the fuse panel. the other black or black w/red stripe that wire should go to the battery either directly or to a junction box first. make sure that one has good clean contacts
