Security system shutting down car?

Hey Guys-

I was in a parking lot Saturday night, shut my car off and came back about 30 mins+ later, and when I turned the key to start it up, all the dash lights flashed for a split second and nothing....I was like "ohh ****, now what?"...

....waited about 5-10 seconds and tried again, this time the car fired up, held idle for 2 seconds, and then EVERYTHING died, no lights, no nothing....completely dead...

I played with it for 10 mintues, battery cables were fine, battery was charged, alternator looked good... but everything was just dead, even the head / brake lights, nothing would turn on....I thought something electronic was lose or fried...and that the computer was disabling the car on purpose...

Waited for a little while longer and I turned the key without engaging the ignition and the dash lit up....turned the key to start and again, everything died... so I said, ok...something is really wrong here...

Finally (after waiting awhile again), I fired it up and it idled, drove it around and everything seemed ok...took it to my mechanic, and he told me the car was tripping up a security code....

My car is a 1990 IROC-Z, is this the VATS system? He had BOTH my sets of keys checked for their frequencies, and BOTH came back ok...and he talked with GM, and they seem to think the wire in the ignition that recieves the key frequency is dying out...

Any ideas from you guys? Sounds like I have to bring the car to Chevrolet to get this fixed...

If you have a little black resister pellet near the shoulder of your key then it's the vats system.

VATS doesn't do anything once the car is started.

Took the car to a Chevrolet dealer today...

They are going to take a look at the security wiring in the ignition cylinder....the mechanic said he was convinced the current wires were worn and need replacing...which is why my car was trippin the security system...

Not a cheap thing to get fixed because you have to pull out alot to get to the wires AND it requires two new sets of keys ($40.00 each)....it's not so much the parts, as it is the labor involved...

They are also workin on my EGR, which has given me alot of trouble since I bought the car in April of 2001...

Keep an eye on those 10 year old security systems guys, they are a pain when they go bad...

Once the car is running the VATS system still has to consistantly sustain its current of ohms if not it will cause an intermidiate connection either in the wiring or in the contact itself. The only solution is to replace the lock.

Talked to the dealer again today, and apparently it's not my VATS system...

They are saying the car isn't getting proper power distribution...the starter gets power, but then somewhere up from that, there is a short or block of somesort...which would explain why the car fired up, and then died...

Not too sure why it tripped a security code though, perhaps in my attempting to start it for 20 minutes with the power problem, the computer thought I was tryin to "hot-wire" the car?

I also had a shop work on getting the fog lights to function, and he wasn't totally sure if he installed the proper fuses for them, could this be causing the short?

The car just had a rebuilt starter put in, so maybe that is causing it (ie, improper installation)...there is a short somewhere along the line, either way...it sounds cheaper than putting in a new security wire!!
