HEI Coil upgrade

Greetings gurus!

My 86 Camaro 305 LG4 is modded as per my sig. The problem I have is typical: the engine wants to lay down and puke at 4000 to 4500 rpm. It gets mighty unhappy at having to work so hard and from what I can gather on this forum it is the fault of the stock GM HEI coil.

Is there a really good replacement coil for my distributor? (It is totally stock other than a Crane vacuum/curve kit.)

Also, I want to avoid having to replace the stock cap and rotor. Who makes an excellent coil that runs jim dandy with my setup?

I put an Accel "super coil" on my camaro,, it now craps out at 5k instead of 4500. Didn't really help much of anything else thought,, but my camaro is a heap as well.

I'm usually pretty sceptical when it comes to aftermarket products claiming great gains
when replacing good factory part, but....

I recently replaced my coil in my stock HEI
with a MSD HEI coil. The car wa "OK" before
i changed it but thought it could be improved
(throttle response). I got the steal center pin (recommended) too. Well there was a nice noticable difference in throttle response
with it. Definitly worth the money. Apparently their MSD HEI module combined with their MSD HEI coil are about all the ignition you'll ever need. I haven't got the module yet but it's on my list. I don't know if it made my car faster, I'd have to do back to back testing but it seemed to work as promised. If you've got some real problem like bad plug wires or leaky valve guides
or something, this won't fix it. But if ya want to upgrade to a better coil, this is a good one.

From: out of my mind; be back in 5 minutes....
Car: 1989 Firebird Formula
Engine: Internal Combustion
Transmission: Completed
Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
If you're still running the stock cam, that could also be the reason why it's starting to lay down after 4000; mine *used*to do that until I swapped in one that has .420" lift both intake and exhaust. It came out of another engine, so I don't have any other specs on it, but it now revs freely to 5500 which is as high as I dare take it because of the mileage on the engine (over 217,000 miles).
If you do replace the cap and rotor, get a cap with brass terminals - they don't corrode over nearly as quick as the more common aluminum terminals.
I'm running an Accel HEI Supercoil, it's not bad by any means, but there are better ones available.

Well, that Proform 50,000 volt coil has certainly made a difference!!!

I was pretty skeptical whether or not it would--I mean, either the plugs are firing or they're not, eh?

Not so fast! I can tell right away that it is idling even smoother than it was before, and I thought it was tuned really well, what with my Bosch Platinum plugs (which really do make a difference, in my opinion). But this coil has made it idle as smooth as a baby's bottom. There just isn't even a ripple now!

And, interestingly enough, the exhaust has quieted down. This is surprising but I suppose that even minor misfirings will make it louder.

The carb seems to have settled down now, too. Hmm, who'd have thought that? Of course it was warmed up really well by the time the coil went in, but still

I'll keep a critical ear open for any carb bogging over the next few days when it is cold. Of course QJets don't like to behave themselves for at least 10 minutes, but this one has been cranky about opening the secondaries smoothly so we'll see.

The party is still over at 4500 rpm (though I did get it would up to 4700 on the way home) so it is probably a tired out set of valve springs, or maybe the cam like was said.
