Easiest way is to replace the battery wires. One goes to the big lug on the starter and the other goes to a ground on an engine bracket. Doesn't get any simpler than that.

But why? The side terminals are better. I'm gonna guess and say you stripped them or rounded off the bolts.

Two tips:

1) They don't have to be super tight, just snugged.

2) Don't tighten them with a wrench. Just use the wrench to get them snug, then use some pliers around the round part to actually give it a little torque. If you feel you must tighten them with a wrench, use a 5/16" 6-point, never a 12-point, and definitely never with a crescent wrench.

or.. you can get a Snap-On 5/16" GM Battery Terminal wrench and never have a problem again.

I changed mine....but I had to because you can't get hold of the screw terminal batteries in this country.

As the Jza said, I replaced the battery cables...although I didn't do the whole cable, just some cable extention with round terminal connectors on the ends. Clamped them good and insulated them well, and all is fine.

Couldn't give you any pros and cons for you doing it, as I don't know availabilities etc over there, but as I said, I really didn't have a choice!!

i wanna change cause mu amp wire si all big and it offsets the giant round red thing that screws to it, if i get the top mount battery then i can just hook one of them clips to it. and there are some top mount connects for my amp rather then just a ring terminal.

howbout getting a battery with top and side posts? i run main wire to the sides and all my accessories to the top posts (4ga amp lead, msd6al, fog lights, etc) with one of those brass distribution block things...actually looks pretty clean that way...otherwise it'd look like an overloaded outlet...

Hi si.
No problems with that. I couldn't get a heavy duty battery that would fit in the "hole" in the battery panel. They were either too long, too wide or too tall!! The closest one was £61, but was too wide. I was amazed when he offered me a side terminal one with the exact dimensions of the old one for the next day. If you want I can find their suppliers as a matter of interest.

£15 is too damn good!!

Hows the resto going?

Andy.

A supplier would be interesting, maybe I could get some in for the shop...I'd like to get some specialist parts in there because there are a few enthusiasts in my area.

The resto is plodding on. I'm practically ready to put the engine back together now, all I need is a head gasket set and some time away from this hole I call married life. I'll be borrowing a digital camera from a friend soon, and taking some pictures of the newly worked heads and intake. Maybe I'll find time to put them on the website too!
