alternator noise

When i first bought the car. 1986 t/a 305 c.i.d. four barrel carb. The alternator belt squeled. Now the alternator itself is making a noise similiar to a rusty gerbil cage wheel. Any one have any solutions. And what do i replace it with a more powerfull alt? I have not had any problems with my charging system yet.

Probably bearings
If it was me, I'd take it apart and replace the bearings, probably the brushes as well--since it would already be apart. Or, go to your local parts dealer and pick-up a rebuilt/new alternator and install it. Unless you run a very high powered stereo system, you don't need a 'high' powered alternator. If your stock one is charging enough now, all you need is a stock replacement.
