I have the same exact problem with reverse in my car. I switched mirrors, from the auto dimming one to the regular one with the map lights. I'm guessing that has something to do with it.

I was checking out some wiring diagrams and i think i figured out the reverse thing with the map lights. When in reverse the the gear selector switch sends a signal (i'm guessing 12v) to the automatic day/night mirrors (lt. green wire) , if you originally had the automatic day/night mirror and replaced it with a regular mirror (like I did), then some wiring might have to be changed. I'm gonna take a look at it tomorrow. I'll let you know.

I haven't fixed my reverse problem yet but i think i figured it out. I'm going to cut the light grean wire near the splce and connect that to the courtesy light circuit so that when I open my doors my map lights go on.

I was looking through diagrams and figured this one might help you out.

I've heard that the green wire w/the auto dimming mirror does exactly what you describe. It's supposed to cut out the dimming deal when you hit reverse--so you can see where you're going.
I saw this on a tech article.

I fixed the map light problem today. I realized earlier that i couldnt' tap into the courtesy light circuit because there is constant power to it. It works by the door jam switch grounding it when the door is open. So if i was to tap into that circuit it would be on all the time. But i found a simple solution to it, there is a connector behind the drivers side kick panel. Look for a lt green wire and find the connector on it. Once you do just disconnect it and the map lights won't go on when in reverse anymore.

When i disconnected the green wire it just stops it from going on when in reverse. It still works when i use the switch on the mirror.
