please help!!!guage is not reading car temp....

ok i think ive posted something like this before but i cant remember so her it goes...i have an 87 IROC 350 TPI
i was told that if my temp sender was working correctly that when i turn on the car, my temp guage should peg all the way high then go back down...it does that. from there on it will not read my temp. could i have a bad thermostat? theres another problem that ive been having which i think may be involved with this which is that my cooling fans will not turn on. im thinking if my car is unable to read the temp then the computer will not know when to turn on the fans? am i right?

Your fans do not work off the same sensor as the gauge. The gauge is operated by the temp. sending unit (located between the first two exhaust ports on drivers cyl. head). See pic in this post.

If you guage is not working you may need a new sending unit. If your fans are not working you may need a temp switch for the fans which is located at the front of the intake manifold under the throttle body.

Guage self test will happen regardless of what shape the guage sender is in, it will happen even with it disconnected which I suspect it is. Look between cyl's 1&3 for a single green wire going to a fitting, that's the one that feeds the guage. Betcha the wire is either burned or simply came off.

if the sending unit is damaged, wouldnt the gauge not peg high when the car is started? ill look for the wire when i get home, i think the last time i checked there was no wire going into that area of the cylinders, but i may be wrong.

that switch is for the computer, the fan switch is on the pass side of the block between the last 2 cylinders

alright, can somebody show me exactly what the wire looks like for the guage sending unit looks like (an unpluged pic)? i looked in there and there was a green wire floating around, looks like a suspect! also i felt around the area you told me that this thing should be plugged into and all i could feel was some kind of nut, i did not see or feel any wire going into that area (although i could barely see much).oh ya and if anyone can show me a clear pic of where this plug should go (with it not connected in)?
