let me rephrase:

i am swapping a 6 cyl mechanical cluster for an 8 cyl electric speedo and cluster. there is two connectors that plug into the cluster. the 6 cyl and 8 are not the same. what needs to be changed. what plugs do the grounds run to. what plugs do the rpm, oil pressure, water temp, and gas guage run to?

any help is appreciated.

GM shop manual from www.helminc.com will list all the colors and connector pins you need.

OK I just got done with a very similar swap (mine was a dummy light cluster for a gauge cluster). The easiest way that I though of to do this, after I was done of course, is to take your old cluster and trace where a wire goes on the cluster. Note what the wire controls and what color that wire is. After you did this look at the new cluster and trace back, say the oil pressure gauge, and move the wire to the correct position on the connector. I hope this makes sense.

Also when I was done there was one extra illumination wire which I just taped to make sure that it did not ground out and stuffed it behind the dash. The gauges still light up nice and bright.

One more thing, If the cluster you are swapping from has dummy lights instead of gauges you will need a new temp and oil senders. You will also need to run a wire to the distributor for the tach.

If you need any help feel free to ask.

One more thing and I'll stop.

When removing a wire from that connector you want to push the wire further into that connector and put a small flat object, like a jewelers screwdriver, in and then pull the wire out. You will see why after you get the first one out.

that was th e origional plan, but the person that had the car before me hacked everything up. i am swapping because nothing works right. all the wires were already dosconnected and messed up.

i am really glad that was able to work for you...im probably going to take the car to a auto electician and let them mess with it.

have fun with your new cluster because mines turning out to be a cluster f***.
