HELP! all of a sudden my car is extremely slow!
i was just driving to the store the other day and when i got on the gas a little bit there was no acceleration. it's like i'm driving around in a 110 hp z28. the motor sounds perfectly fine and i checked everything i could think of and everything seems fine. what can this be? i can only suspect it has something to do with the electrical stuff. i was thinking the coil or some other part of the ignition. i was wondering if anyone else out there had any problems similar to this and if yes then how did you fix it? thanks

Yeah I would check your electrical. Make sure your running on all cylinders. Do yourself a favor and give it a tuneup.

I agree, if the cat plugged that's exactly what happens. If he was missing even a cylinder he would know it. Also check the distributor, maybe it was loose and moved causing a timing change.

I would check that anyhow. I have seen people run a car with cylinders not firing and its really unnoticeable. Sheesh I even recall a time when i noticed one of my wires wasnt even connected. I tell you what there was no sure sign it was unplugged just the fact i noticed while under the hood. I tell you what I picked up power after that. I speak from experience. I would think to look for a simpler solution than the clogged cat and work from there. Then if everything seems to be in order than take that route.

i'm thinking it might be the timing. i've noticed that when i engine break there is a lot of popping in the exhuast from backfiring and i assume that is from bad timing. does that make sense? or is it something else. thanks for all your replies.

well i have good news and bad news. the good news is that i found the problem. it was the timing. it was bouncing from 0 to 4 degrees which is not great for my setup. i advanced it to 12 degrees and WOW! i have been missing out. i thought i did something wrong in the swap cause i was not achieving the performance i was hoping for, but with the timing at 12 degrees she really opened up. this was last wednesday and i was very happy and excited with my car. BUT the bad news is that i went out friday night to race one of my friends in his dad's BMW 745 which is somewhat respectible. i couldn't resist the offer so i went out and raced him. we raced till about 115 and i had a half of a car length on him with a LOT of wheelspin for me off of the line and minimal wheelspin for the BMW. well to make a long story short on the way home i noticed my car seemed a little funny. then worse. when i have the throttle down more than 30% it starts to jutter and seems like the fuel is going on and off repeatedly, making me angry. i got to my friends turned it off, let it cool down and then went to start it to go home and it didn't. my friend jumped me and i drove home with out ever letting my foot off of the gas cause it kept wanting to die at idle. i finally got it home and went to bed. saturday i went out to look at it. i noticed a hose wasn't plugged in at the back of the plenum so i plugged it in and she started up with a little trouble, but at least she was idling. i took it for a test drive and that juttering is still there, damn i thought it would of been simple to fix
so i assume (a very big assume) that it is just the timing again. so i went out and bought a timing gun cause the first time i took it to my local mechanic that i've known for a long time and he checked it and changed it for me, so i figured i'll do it this time. but i have no clue how to do it. i did searches and found out how, but it just doesn't make sense to me so i figured i'd just advance the timing anyway without checking to see what it was at. so i loosened the bolt and went to go turn the distributer counterclockwise but i couldn't cause there was no more slack in the plug wires. so i just moved it just a tiny bit and tightened the bolt back and now my car doesn't start at all. i read after i did this that before moving the distributer you need to disconnect some wire that's brown, well oops i didn't do that and i'm wondering if that's the reason it isn't starting now. well i was out of town the last few days but now i'm back but it's raining real bad right now so i guess i have to start from scratch tomorrow. do you guess also agree with me it is the timing again? i really hope so cause i don't want for it to be something that's going to cost a lot of money and time to fix. well i'll keep you guys posted, thanks.
