Speedo Wobbling?

Hey

Well lately when I first take off......my speedometer doesn't even move for about 20/30 seconds. After that it goes up to about where I'm running and starts wobbling. Lately I don't even think it's been accurate....I'm guessing it's 5 under. Sometimes it seems accurate, but 90% of the time it seems 5 under. Does anyone have any idea's? Thanks

If the speedo is cable driven then the cable may need to be lubed. If its electronic then the guage itself may be bad.

Hey thanks Matt....(you live anywhere near troy? )

Yeah I have no idea if it's cable or electronic. Can someone briefly explain the best way to get to it? And what kind of lube? Thanks for any help!~!

Well, to check if it is cable driven or electronic, pull the fuse that controls the gauges and see if the speedo works. If it does then it is cable, if the speedo dont move then its electronic.

Not sure of the grease, but i think normal automotive grease will work.

I live in Eastpointe near I94 and 10 Mile. I'm about a mile from the I94 - I696 interchange.

Hey. Thanks for all the replies. Is the fuse for the speedo located in the under-drivers side fusebox? What's the label for it? Thanks

90-92 camaro's have electric speedometers (the 'half moon' style).

i know exactly whats happening... ive already gone thru it on my 91....

its the VSS... on the tranny where the cable goes on most 3rdgens, we have a speed sensor. it behaves like you describe when its going bad... let it go for a few more weeks/days and it will just stop working altogether....

get a new (or gamble on a used one like i did) VSS.

place the car on the driveway or whereever you will be working with the NOSE DOWNHILL. jack up the car from the drivers side only... this will minimize the amount of tranny fluid lost.

get a 10mm socket and ratchet (or a wrench if you have patience) and a small flathead screwdriver..

if the car was just driven, let it cool.. it tends to be rather warm...

next to where the TQ arm mounts to teh tranny you will see a round thingy with a plug in it. use the small screwdriver to CAREFULLY lift the plastic lever and pull the plug.

now next to it is a tab with a 10mm bolt thru it.... take out the bolt..
the sensor should now pull straight out, but suction will probly make it stick a bit... dont worry about it too much, just pull it out..

there should be a little plastic gear on it when it comes out.. if its not there, stick your hand in the hold and pull it out... it will go on the replacement sensor.

slip the gear on the new replacement sensor. put some ATF on the Oring of the new sensor( just dip your clean finger in the tranny and wipe some on it) and slip the new sensor back in, as you slide it in, try to line the tabs hole with the bolt hole...

replace the 10mm and tighten, attach the connector to the sensor and you're all set.

put the car on level ground, start it, watch for leaks, then take it for a drive to see your new working speedo.

Also, Where exactly is it located under the car? I'm sorry I'm a complete newbie and I want to know everything before I start the installation. Also, if you have any pictures I would appreciate it a lot . Thank you

sorry no pics that i took.. when i did it, it was just a quick 10min thing to get my speedo working...

its a round thing, on the tailshaft of the tranny. it is the only thing on the back of the tranny with a plug in it. it looks like its held in with a tab to the side with a bolt thru it... its tough to see unless you wiggle under the car just right since the TQ arm is so close to it... but you can see it.. i searched google for a pic real quick but i couldnt find one.....
