Once I read somewhere about modifying an alternator for higher output - does anyone have instructions (tech article) on how to do this? I think it involves changing a diode or something like that. Replies are much appreciated.

 

Go to www.alternatorparts.com They have kits available to increase output for most GM alternators. To increase the output you need to replace the stator. It is the fixed coil around the rotor. Also a heavier diode package is normally included in most kit type upgrades. Remember, by increasing the alts output you generally will have LESS output at idle than the old one. To upgrade involves cracking the case of the alt open, unsoldering the old stator and then removing the diode and regulator package. If you do that youself you can do the job for under a hundred bucks. I have used a few of their "iceberg" kits, it's basically a kit of all components-bearings, diode trio, new finned rear case for better heat transfer and of course brushes. I have mixed feelings about the kit components. They are not OE, but imported knockoffs. I prefer to use the OE diode package, regulator(if needed) and brushes. They offer them for only a couple of dollars more. If it is you first attempt, why not go to a boneyard and get one to use for an upgrade. That way you can take your time to do it correctly without running the risk of not having the car. It is not overly complicated, but does take some time if its the first time you have done one.
