distributer problem

I was just looking at my distributor cap and I noticed that the bolt that holds the distributer in place was realy loose. I found this out because I turned the distributer(darn). Anyway, I timed it a 6 deg like the sticker in the hood says, when I drove it it had no power at all, so I compensated to 12 deg, but I know thats wrong and I dont want to run it like that. I guess there is some sort of tan with a black stripe wire that I am suposed to disconnect, but I cant find it(or so says the sticker under the hood). If someone can help, I would appriciate it.
Thanks

The wire is by the firewall, passenger side. There are wires running along the top and the wire you're talking about comes out to a straight plug then goes back in.

I have advanced my timing and never had a problem, until the starter kicks back. Then I just retard it a little.

Don't try changing the timing with the engine running, the ecm will compensate. Do it with the engine off.
