Brake Light Bypass Switch

So today while driving i was hit with (in my mind) a clever idea. i want a switch that will turn off my brake lights when i want them to. not the complete taillights, just the bright lights when i press the brakes. where wouid be a good place to cut into the brake light wire and put a switch? has anyone tried this? i want to put one of those toggle switches that will only stay in the one position unless you hold it in the other (spring-loaded i guess you would call it) so i don't accidentally leave the brake lights off. could someone explain to me where the wire is that comes off the brake pedal? thanks in advance!!!

pretty illegal and unsafe? Yes
pretty cool and impressive to friends? Definately. :hail:

I've wanted to do something like this too.

Also, I think it'd be cool if you could turn the brake lights on without touching the pedal. So when people are tailing you too close you could throw the lights on without actually braking.

How difficult would this be to do?

lol.. a combo of both
a switch that is in the center, but you can hold it either towards you, or away.. and it returns to the center

not sure if they make one of those, though

why not just lightly touch the brake pedal? it should turn on the lights, and not actually stop you

to slow without brakelights:
ebrake.

to shine lights without stopping:

light pressure on the brake pedal... probly with your left foot so your right can remain on the gas.

im presuming that the no lights is for when a cop suddenly appears.... if you have to brake harder then you can easily do with the ebrake, then you're already cought, jam on the binders and hope for a lower ticket.... if you need to slow without causing attention to yourself, ebrake is how you do it... heck i did it yesterday when a cop suddenly pulled out in front of me and was pacing me...

for the light brake trick, if they dont come on with just a feather touch, you can reach under there and slide the switch back and forth until you have it just right....

i looked into this awhile ago with my Caddillac (first car)...what I managed to do was find the ground on the tail light and interrupt it with a switch taht I routed to the front of my car...worked like a charm...the switch I used would beabeout the same kinda switch you would use with push button ignition...i think they sell a tauto parts stores as "Ignition Switches" and run form 2-10$ each...get you about 50 Feet of wire and you are set...jsut keep in mind...if you brake so hard that the front of oyur car dives down, and no tail lights are on...you get hit with speeding and whatever the charge for having non functional brake lights....away you can argue this with a cop migh tbe by saying "oh well they are nto working?" then he will probibly go to the rear of your car and ask you to pres your brakes, and when he comes back and says they are working fine, just tell him "wow, well I guess there migh tbe a loose wire or something, Ill have to check into it when I get home" or soemhting of that nature and they will prolly let ya by...

the kind of switch that goes to both sides and returns to center is called DPDT momentary, and to wire this in would be hella easy, just cut one of the wires going to the brake light switch, and put that switch inbetween the cut wires, simple as that

for the brakes, u can cut one of the wires that is right on the brake light switch, which is attached to the brake pedal thingy

Wait a minute.... When I click my e-brake even one notch (doesn't start braking yet), my brake lights come on.

The pedal tap is a good idea. No mods neccessary You'd have to practice left footing the brake though. I tried it once in a parking lot just to see what it felt like and i braked so hard I stalled the car out (manual tranny). I was intending to brake lightly, but my left foot must have thought the brake was a thick clutch pedal LOL

the light on the dash comes on, but your rear brake lights that people see from outside the car dont come on.

Syxx613: under the dash, look at the brake pedal.. on the arm going up you will see a flat piece on it.... when the brake is all the way off, that flat piece will be pushing on a switch.

The wire you are looking for is right off the brake switch. It is a negative pulse wire (goes ground when the switch is activated, not 12+). To test for it, put one lead of your meter on 12+, and then probe the wires on the switch one by one, pressing the brake pedal for each one. When the meter reads 12+, you found your wire. Just interrupt it with a relay and a switch, and you'll be set.

I hear that this mod is great for running from the cops too, because if you got a little distance on them they can't tell that you're slowing. This was real big with drug runners back in the 50's

I'm with D_JOHNSEN that the best way to do it would be just cutting a cable from the brake light switch underneath the dash and just plug the switch on both sides of the cable ( of course not leaving the switch down there, just run two cables from down there to wherever you want to put the swith in.

yup, all it does it when the switch is turned off is interrupt the flow of ground to the switch, which in turn wont send ground to the brake lights when u press the pedal
