Need Help Alternator

I have an 86 Camaro Iroc-z 305 TPI The other day I noticed that My power steering Fluid was leaking on the alternator and wire and I noticed that The heavy wire that bolts on to the back of the alternator was first bulging then over heating then the plastic burnt off the copper. To the point it almost caught fire. Now my question to all you thirdgeners is the heavy wire that is connected to the back of the alternator where does it connect to I keep reading that it goes straight to the battery but it does not look like it goes directly to the battery Please help very confused

On my car, it does go straight to the battery. It runs beneath the throttle body, though that mess of everything, and connects directly to the positive terminal. I've been having issues with my alternator as well, so I'm VERY certain this is how it runs. I even pulled the damn thing off and tested it for continuity.

Actually, it should run to the starter on the battery terminal post. Yes...direct connection to the battery...and if you want to, you can run it directly to the battery.

Thats' just not how the factory did it!
