Theft Prevention
Hey guys, last night my cd deck and a couple other things got stolen
so Im going to get an alarm. Any recomendations? I dont want something too pricey since im on a college budget
but then again i dont want some cheap a** alarm that will go off all the time. Later on I will probably tint the side windows and rear hatch so people cant see in. What else can I do to prevent theft? Thanks.

Alarms are fairly cheap, I priced an alarm with remote start, and keyless entry, with a proximity for the T-tops a while back and it was only something like $300, with 2 remotes.
But you'll have to shop around for alarms.
If you are worried about your things getting stolen, Bolting them down can slow down whoever is tryin to steal stuff emensly. I dont know too many people running around will tool boxes trying to break into cars. Tinting your windows is a good idea, If you have a stereo dont plaster your windows with the decals.
Park in well-lit areas, and try not to park too far from where you are at. These days just an alarm wont do much, most people walk right by. You can get a pager alarm, but thats around $500.
The best, ghetto rigged alarm, would be to get a normal alarm, and put a few sirens inside your car. Most of those things hit 150db. And I'm sure no one can take that for very long. Especially if you have 4 bolts in whatever u are stealing all diff size bolts. You can turn your stereo down a bit when you enter neighbourhoods.
If you have T-tops try not to leave em out, but if you do. Get a Prox alarm. I guess your not worried about getting your car stolen, just the stuff in it. I swear nothing works better than bolting it down. Tinting the windows will definitly help, if you cant see it, how can u steal it..
You really should do a search for alarms, there are literally about 1000 posts with this kinda info.

Fairly cheap tape deck with a removable face and well hidden cd changer. Who is going to break into your car to steal a tape deck with no face?
Or park next to a car with a much nicer stereo than you.

Those pager systems are nice. My budy has one, but the damn problem is that you have to be close. I think the max range is like 1/4 mile but that is without buildings and stuff in your way. Best thing to do is what Daishi said. Plus I would get get a removable stearing wheel of a cut of switch for your ignition so nobody steals your car.
if someone wants something bad enough they are going to get it at any cost.
if you must have nicer things in your car you should get a decent alarm. dei makes nice ones but if you can't afford that audiovox surprisingly also makes really nice ones. they have a pager unit that is under 100 that works quite well. email me if you would like to know more as i have one laying around i'm not using.
the hardest part with our cars is the windows anyone can break in easily so you really can't stop someone who is really trying but you can deter them by not parking in the back of lots and not showing off blasting your radio.

lets sum this up very quickly.....the windows can be pulled out when fully up so there is no worry of detection from the alarm. if you do not have a working underhood light this allows for the wires to be cut when the hood is raised enough for cutters to get in which can easily be done without an alarm going off.
one who really knows what they are doing can get into a thirdgen of any style in under 5 seconds and have the alarm disconnected without anyone knowing. i worked for many years dealing with alarms and installations in general. if you truly have something worthwhile in your car you had better get a good alarm that has different stages. otherwise the right people can completely rip off your car with a pair of cutters and 4 hands in under 20 seconds.

damn thats scary. I dont really have much valuables in my car right now but will probably later in the future. I also just want to at least try and protect my car from being stolen. They could have easily stole my car last night which has me worried.

Thats what a kill switch is for, put it in a hard to find place, rig up a few switches that each need to be in a certain position for the car to start, and don't run the wireing anywhere obvious.
I have to leave my car in a parking garage for a week at a time without seeing it. what I do, is I just take the wire thats in the middle of the distributer with me. I doubt they will cary an extra wire on them

i could still get to it if everything was in stock locatiosn.....any well knowledable theif with a known location of the battery and starter could have your car easily. park it in the back of a lot or an area where i could have at least a min and it wouldn't be a problem. unless you take your battery with you everytime you leave your car it's not safe.
there are alot of ways you can go about making your car theft proof but it isn't necessarily worth it. if you have your car built as much as mine you may want to pursue such ideas. most thiefs that do things like what happen to you are young punk kids looking for fun which in case a deterent alarm is typically good enough.
