140 amp alternator swap

140 amp alternator swap

Did a search but answers seem vague so here goes. I want to upgrade to a 140 amp alt but I have a serpentine belt setup on my 85. Can this be done? If so, what are the part numbers etc. Where can I get a bolt in 140 alt from? Thanks.

Hey Capt.,

I was searching for these earlier today, and I found this site: www.aftermarketperformanceparts.com. They have hi-amp alternators for GM cars. They're not cheap, but this site is less than another site I found, which was selling the same parts. I found them while doing a search for chevy performance parts.

I've never thought my car's charging system was up to the challenge of the car, so I'd also like to go with the hi-amp alternator. But I don't have a serpentine belt drive, so my only question for installing one is do I have to alter my fuses, battery or electrical system to accomodate the more powerful alternator?

the only thing you should do is run a larger wire from the alt to the batt

Cool, thanks. I know the wire. I just put a new copper ring connector on the end that attaches to the alternator. And from looking at Jim85IROC's sticky above, I'd need a 4ga wire.

Thanks for the sticky. I just need to know now if I can run that amp with a serpentine setup. My thoughts after reading some past threads were, NO. Can anyone help with this question? thanks.
