Have you checked the fusible link on the starter solenoid that goes to the alternator?

you changed the alt a few times, what about the battery? batteries do eventually lose their ability to hold the charge (or sometimes ya just have to add some water)

double check the wiring going from the alt to the batt, make sure it hasnt been hacked up at all and improperly put back together

Rarely do the fuse links fail, the tie point should be at the starter. Perhaps corrosion occurred down there. Another thing to look for is the fuse panel top right for a fuse labeled "chg/fan". That line turns the alt on and off. 89 should have a 2 wire top plug and the rear lug. Rear lug should read with a voltmeter the same as the battery, the top plug will have one heavier guage red (usually) wire that should also read battery voltage. The brown/tan wire is key controlled voltage slightly lower than battery which is called the "sense" wire. It monitors voltage in the interior harness and turns the alt up or down according to electrical demand.
