Can a poor battery cause an alternator to die?

Guys, our battery has been struggling for a while. It doesn't seem to hold a charge for very long. If we drive the car once or twice a week then things are fine. However, it goes dead after 2-3 weeks of not driving it. Then we have to charge it up using a mains charger for a few hours.

Can this cause undue strain or anything on the alternator eventually leading to it burning out or dying?

Many thanks for any help or suggestions!

yes, get a new battery, its cheaper than a new alternator and battery.

i second that. My alt. died about a month after i got my car(seized up) then I got a new alt, and about 4 weeks after that, IT stopped! What would ya know!....the battery was totally dead, so I got a new batt. and the alt. had been running fine since(about 8 months since the incident). So, i just wanted to second that, because I learned from it happening to me!
