Checking Engine Temp Guage

Can anyone tell me a good way to check the accuracy of a engine temp guage. Mine doesn't work very well, it hangs dead south at baseline, and doesn't go over 180 at anytime. When the car theoretically should be warmed up, the needle points to about 120 - 140. That can't be right, I don't think.

I have another post about one of my two fans running all the time, but I doubt that would keep the car running only 140. So I'm guessing the guage is bad or off.

What's everyone's opinion here?

Pull the sender out of the engine and place it in a container with water and a thermometer.
