Low Voltage

I jsut put a new 160 AMP alternator because my volt guage keeps saying it is at 12 volts or below. I have a new battary as well. I was thinking that maybe the wire to the distribution block may be going bad. I woudl like to use 4 guage wire but it wont fit in the distribution block so i was thinking of leaving the wire that goes from the alternator to the distribution block intact and not replace it and run a wire from my alternator to my battary directly. So i wuld have the power from my alternator going to the distribution block to power what ever needs powering. And have a thicker guage wire from the same spot on the alternator go directly to the battary. Would That cause any problems since the battary would then be charged from 2 spots insted of 1?

check the voltage between...
battery+ to battery ground
battery+ to chassis ground
back of alt+ to bat ground
back of alt+ to chassis ground

that should help you out alot more to see what is wrong
