Instrument Panel Lamps DIED???
I just installed a brand new cd player in the stock factory location in a 85 iroc. My problem is that my gauge lights went out, the buzzer when you leave your headlights is off, the lights for the heater/a/c are out and the trans shifter ind. lights are out. These are all together according to my owners manual. Is there a way that I could have cut these wires wiring my stereo up? I remember cutting one yellow wire from a blue harness thinking it was the 12v line. Could this have been it? Any help is greatly appreciated as I cant see my gauges at night and cant tell how fast im going , how much gas i have. Thanks you!

Check the "TAIL" fuse in the fuse block, this is the fuse for all the lights you mentioned. There is a another fuse that is tied into that one and is the "INST LMP" fuse. Also splice that yellow wire back together. It is also not a good idea to start cutting wires under the dash or anywhere else without knowing what their function is. Just a helpful hint there.

The turn signals operate off the "TURN-B/U" fuse in the fuse panel and the "HAZARD" in the convenience center. If you will look in your owners manual, you will find a fuse marked "TAIL", see picture below. It handles your marker lights, parking lights, instrument lights, shifter plate light, and license plate lights.

Trickster,
I checked the tail fuse and low and behold it had blown. I put in a new one and it blew that fuse too. What could be causing this? Thanks man.

You have a short in there somewhere, probably caused when you put that new CD player in there. Did you by any chance add some wires to the fuse block to power this new CD player

Just go through the wiring and check it for damage and drop the fuse panel and see if you have any stray wire strands touching up there.

Trickster,
I checked every fuse in there and sure enough the fuse you told me about had blown. I also fixed the yellow wire and spliced it back together. I put in another fuse in there and I turned on my headlights. The little buzzer came on for 2 seconds and then poof the fuse blew. What could be causing this man? Thank you so much for your ongoing help. I really appreciate it.

Does anyone know if there is a gauge wire harness right behind the radio? If so, do you have any pics of what it is supposed to look like? My gauge lights keep blowing a fuse. This seems to happen when I turn my lights on. I hear the buzzer and then you can hear the fuse burn out. Thanks!!

There is the wire harness for the light in the A/C control unit above the radio. It is one of the lights that you are losing. The wire for it may have been pinched or cut when you installed the radio.

Not of much use but, there is also the light wiring to the shifter (guessing auto. ?) that runs past the radio and the radio lamp dimmer that is normally cut and taped off since it's rare aftermarket units have dimming lights. Either of those can aid in the problem, too.
i basically had the same porblem when i installed my cd player.....no dash lights or tail lights my tail light fuse kept blowin out....what i did was go back through the cd install process and found my problem....what i did was spice into a hot wire that was for my instrument , when lights off it acted like a ground but when lights on it was a live wire a kept blowin my fuse ......so the cd player out and put in new fuse turn on lights and see if it still pops the fuse if it does not then you found your problem ......reinstall cd player and ground it properly....THE WIRE I HAD TROUBLE WITH WAS BROWN I THINK IT WAS THE LIGHT FOR THE AC/HEATER UNIT...i hope this helps you
