Dang, cause I need an extra one, and that was the only place I thought would be able to do it...

as far as i know a dealership is the only place you can get a key with the resistor made it runs a little of thirty dollars just try calling around to different dealerships other wise get an ohm meter and check the resistor in the key. here is a helpful artical on the system in general, it also includes a table for the ohms and key number so you can just tell the dealer ship what you need if they dont have the equipment to check. http://home.t-online.de/home/O_Scholz/vats.html

Did you lose the key? If you pull the lock cylinder out you will see a code etched on it. If the original cylinder has not been changed, the dealership can cut you another key. They will also need to know what the resistance code was. I have heard from others on the board that Ace hardware carries the coded keys as well as some locksmiths. Check around.

any good locksmith can make one.

or for a emergency backup, do what i did.

measure the resistance of your key with a ohm meter.
buy a resistor with the correct resistance (20 cents for a pack of 10)

goto walmart/ace hardware/ect and get a regular key copy for about one to three dollars....

keep the copy and resistor with the car. even if someone tries to use the key, it will never start.

when you goto use it, reach under the dash and unplug the tiny vats wires connection.... shove the resistor in there, then turn the key.......

Nothing to add, except to say that I'm sympathic: I had a key made for a 99 Chrysler at a cost of $104 with key fob.

when i asked about the keys to my old VW (laser cut, switchblade keys with remote built in), they said they cost a little over $200.

I dont have the original key anymore. Thats why I need a new one. I know the cylinder has been changed more than once. One owner took out the VATS somehow and the guy I bought it from had it put back in. I lost the key just after I got the car and havent been able to do anything with the car...And now it looks like Im goin to have to sell it.
