Dead horn

The beater Firebird ('87) has no horn. My Haynes manual has totally zip about it, no circuit diagrams or anything. Is there a troubleshooting chart floating around somewhere I could follow, or has anyone had experience with the stock horm system? Worst comes to worst, I could simply help the new owner wire in a new one, but why spend more money than we have to, right?

The most common failure with the horn is the contactor in the steering wheel. If you remove the horn button you'll see a wire on it that goes into a "straw" down in the column. The contactor may have just poped out, it is held in the "straw" by 2 pegs on it that go into grooves in the straw. Insert the spring contactor and push & turn 1/4 CW and let go. If it stays...good, if the horn works..even better, if not then the contactor ring down in the column has slipped. If the contactor pops back out of the "straw" then the notches in the straw are broken and you'll either have to replace the plastic piece that the straw is a part of or devise a way to hold the contactor in there.

In addition to what Morley has suggested, check the horn relay in the convenience center.

Go to a auto parts store and get a new one, remove the steering wheel and replace it.
