dash lights not working
I am wondering how many wires are there that controls the lights. I have tried finding them but I have had no luck. Its really annoying not having those at night.

Which lights are you referring to? The ones in the dash or all the lights.
Have you checked all your fuses, the dimmer switch, the ground wires, and the light bulbs in the dash?

There are two ground wires under the dash for the instrument cluster. Which fuses did you check? Was it the INST fuse?
There is a green wire that goes from the light switch to the "INST" fuse, from there it is a gray wire that goes to the instrument panel lights.

I believe those "dash lights" your referring to also are wired into the running lights. When you turn your heads lights on do your back tail lights turn on too? If they dont, I had this happen, was a fuse.

You are correct Pasky, there are two fuses in that circuit. The "Tail" fuse gets power from a fusible link and supplies power to the light switch. The "INST" fuse in his car has a green wire running to the light switch and a gray wire running from the "INST" fuse to the instrument panel and associated lights. If it's not the fuse, then he should check that green wire and the gray wire.

When I turn my lights on the taillights work. So where is this INST fuse??? If its on the fuse box can somebody take a pic and show me exactly where it is. I have an 84 and most of the writing on the fuse box is worn. Thanks

First , I'm not breaking your ***** here , I'm really not , , ,but , , ,
bumping a 16 year old thread that isn't even discussing your problem isn't the way to go . Most people will see the 2004 date of the first post and pass the thread by without a look .
The original poster had no dash lights and it sounds as if you have no lights whatsoever , dash or otherwise , am I correct ?
Now to answer your question ; If you were working on the starter , and now large portions of the electrical system are dead , by far the most likely cause will be that one of your fusible links either didn't get hooked back up , or is electrically open (even if the outer insulation looks good the wire within can be bad) ....
