He meant that the lights are turned on and off with the headlight switch. Pull it out and clean the contacts on it and on the harness and try that. If that doesn't do it, find the wire on going to the inst lamps from the headlight switch and verify it has continuity and verify it has power when the headlight switch is on.
Also check your under dash grounds.

Never heard of any "remote dimmer" in any 3rd gen unless you are reffering to the firebirds which have a seperate thumb wheel for dimming lights, but it just sits beside the headlight switch.

That would be the normal light dimmer then, has a large metal heatsink on it.

I once had the same problem on an s10. I know that the s10 did not have a remote dimmer, but what the problem was, one of the liscence plate lites had shorted out. It happens that the liscence plate lites and the dash lights were on the same fuse.....

No "remote" dimmer in bodies.

Hmm, none in my 91 formula, or 85 IROC, possibly a T/A only option.

the remote dimer is built into the swich on camaro but yes the 88 trans am/GTA do have a dimer in it is loacated on the right side of the callum neer the flasher's there is 3 wires going into it and if you replace the dimmer and it still douse not work you can jump two of the wires together with a fuse if you decide to keep this way for good i would run the wires into the fuse box and put a fuse there. The downfall of this is that the lights dimer will not work.
