Hey guys. Before any of u guys jump of my back, i have search. i just want to clear things up. The car drove fine untill 2 days ago. After i came home from work. I parked my car at my house. after maybe 2 hours staying at my house, I was bout to go get some food from the store, but my car wouldn't crank. my security light doesn't come on, but i could hear my fuel pump priming. From the search i assume that if the security light doesn't come on, then it's probably ignition lock. I check the fuse for the vats and its good. Any other possible area i should check before i start to change the ignition locks. I don't have access to a multimeter but try to buy one on monday.

Does the key turn all the way to the start position? Check for power at the purple wire going down to the start when the key is in the start possition. More than likely its a starter and not an ignition lock, but ive seen weirder things.

If the fuel pump primes and the security light doesn't come on that is a good indication that there is a broken wire on the lock cylinder. You can check this by measuring the resistance in the pellet in the key and then disconnect the connector under the dash. Put the key in the lock cylinder and measure the resistance value through the connector. If you don't get a reading then that is the problem.

ya i thought it was a broken wire. My dash is apart but i don't know which connector i should unplug. trickster, do u have a pic of that connector. BTW thanks trickster for ur help

As a matter of fact I do have a picture of it, not exactly an award winning pulitzer prize picture but it will do until I get a better one. The wires coming down your steering column will either be white with an orange wrap or yellow with a black wrap depending on the year. They will connect to a connector with a black/white wire & a yellow/purple wire.

which wire is hot and should check for the impedence?

Neither wire is hot, the ones that you want to check for impedance are the ones coming down from the steering column. They will be either black wrapped yellow wires or orange wrapped white wires.

ok i just bought a multimeter. I checked the resistance on the pellet and I got a reading of 7.43 when set the multimeter on 20k. If I set the multimeter on 2000k, then my reading would be 006. I check the connector and I'm not getting any reading.

You have a broken wire in the steering column then.

i went to the dealership to buy a ignition lock and the parts guy check the impedence on my pellet and its # 13. I just wana double check if the impedence i got from the multimeter is teh same as the reading from the dealership. i just hope i was doing it right.

The resistance value for #13 is 7500 OHM's so you did it right.
ok i went to install the new ignition today, but i have a problem. i don't know where is the lock retaining ring. I have bought the lock plate tool kit but i dunno how to take out the retaining clip.
well im in the middle of my install but i can't find the lock plate ring clip. anybody know where its located. thanx

The lock ring is located at the arrow and "X". To remove it, go to where the circled "X" is and use a small screw driver or pick to pop it up and slide it back up the shaft.

just an update on my problem. I swaped out my old ignition lock with a new ignition lock and the key and the car works prefectly. Thanks trickster for all the help.

i gotta quick question...my ignition lock turns over tot he on position and the fuel pump comes on and all my gauges and everything..just now crank. so the guy before me just got a button with two wires and ran it straight to the starter and the battery. so i turn the key and push the buttion and it starts. What do you think the problem is?
probably a manual kill switch. My friend has that in his 59 impala.
