Need help, Alternator, wiring?
Hey guys.. I went to my parents to hook up the a tach that I bought, and also wire my fan to run with the switch.. so I spliced the positive wire going to the fan and ran an 8 guage wire to an ignition spot in the fuse block.. easy.. then we hooked up the tach.. its a autometer autoguage 5" w/light.. the green wire from the tach went to the white wire coming out of the coil to the distributor.. the black was ground, the red was ignition switch which I also hooked up in the fuse block.. the white wire from the tach went to interior lighting so I took the easy way out and bent the end of the wire around the end of the fuse for the instument lights.. everything worked great.. fan runs, tach works.. I drove off the driveway and the engine quit.. dead as a door nail so we jumped it from dads truck.. looked at the guage and its reading about 10.. which told me the alternator was bad.. took it to autozone, and had them run a bench test.. its good.. came back and checked all the wiring we did.. still nothing.. so we unhooked everything we did.. still nothing.. the car is NOT charging at all but the alternator is good.. what else should I be checking?? I am going back tomorrow morning to work more on it.. so all the replies I can get tonight would be great.. please help guys.. and if the mods can leave this at the top for tonight I would greatly appreciate it..
Thanks in advance

i had charging problems to, what i did was ran a wire 12 gauge i believe from the positive battery terminal to the alternator itself, i wired it to the post on the back of the alternator where the wire is held on with the small nut, i don't know how safe this is ,but i have never had any problems with the connection, and my car push's about 13 volts while running. good luck
