Error Code 42

Need help trouble shooting a code 42. This is an 88 TBI engine. While in park or in motion car will begin to stall and the check engine light comes on.

42. Fault at electronic spark timing circuit OR
Fault at direct ignition system OR
Fault at fuel cutoff relay circuit

42. Fault at electronic spark timing circuit OR
Fault at direct ignition system OR

good luck check your distributor they tend to go bad

I have posted this in the past and will post it again. Hope this helps, an item that you might want to cjeck here is the ignition control module.

it shouldn't display the code for the icm, mine didn't, I actually am running code 42 right now because my timing is off just check your distribution components

It would show a code 42 if you had a short to pin "D" of the ICM.

yeah that i learned today, but if it isn't working properly it wont if he is starting and stalling..........

You'll also show a 42 if the EST connector is disconnected for you to set the base timing and you forget to plug it back in. Ask me how I know.

Error Code 42

The code 42 is intermittent and I have already replaced the pickup coil and the ICM. The EST connector is connected. The car starts to stall, comes back to life and kicks on the SES light. I only find the 42 in the ECM and not sure how to start trouble shooting. I cannot reproduce the problem at will.

Swapped out my ECM and the issue seems to be resolved.
