another headlight issue

okay, so i have spent the last couple of days searching previous threads and havent come up with any direct answers.

here is the problem:

when i bought my 87 trans am, the headlights were constantly in the up position. it didnt really bother me at frist, but i now i want to fix it. when i flip the switch on the dash, i can hear a clicking on the firewall near the wiper motor, which i presume to be the relay module and that its working since its clicking.

so, i pop the hood and manually crank the headlights down. now, when i flip the headlight switch, the lamps come on, but the headlights stay down. as soon as i turn the lamps off, the headlights pop up and stay up.

i have no idea what the deal is here. any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
menace

My wild guess is that the motors or their relays somehow got wired backward. The circuit should be like this on your '87:

Make sure the White and Gray wires on the motor relays and motors are connected correctly. Reversing their positions would cause what you describe.

okay, im not real sure how to read a schematic, but i can kinda tell what i am lookin at here. i got to lookin at the wiring that runs to my head light motors and on the passenger side one, the dark blue wire is just hanging there.... its connected to the motor, but nothing else..... on teh dirvers side, its the same thing with the white wire.... its connected to the headlight motor, but nothing on the other end. where should these wires go???

thanks,
menace

My guess is that they go to the isolation relay. I don't know where that is located, hence my reson for a bit of thread hijacking "Where's the iso.relay located please?"

Cheers,
Mark.

that is what i was gathering from the schematic, but the schematic is showing 3 relays..... the isolation relay, the right actuator relay, and the left actuator relay. the only relay that i am aware of is the one on the firewall near the wiper motor. any info would be greatly appreciated here.

thanks,
menace

Ah, ok. The left and right relays are attached to the headlight motors. At least they are on mine

The schematic is correct for 1982-86 Firebirds. It is not the correct schematic for 1987-92 Firebirds. Those use only one relay called the headlamp control module.
