Please help me find why my fuse keeps blowing

Ok, so the other day I opened my door and noticed that the interior lights didnt go on. THen I saw that my power locks werent working either, I go to honk the horn and nothing... I knew it was a fuse. I looked in my old 85's owners manual, and it said it was fuse number:
11 (20 Amp. - Yellow) - Glove box Lights; Cigar Lighter; Hatchback lid release; Horn relay; Interior lights; Power antenna; Power door locks; Radio/ Digital Clock; Computer Command Control.

I went to change the fuse out and when i put a new one in spark spark blown again... I tried one more time just for shytz and giggles... nope. Now I am on a search to find out why it keeps blowing.

Here is what i did so far...
Glove box lights, I dont have a glove box so i dont have to worry about that one.
Cigar lighter, i took the center console out and just saw the 2 wires plugged in, nothing else is in there at the moment.
Power antenna, isnt hooked up b.c i am not done with installing my radio.
Radio/ Digital clock, i dont have a radio or a clock in there yet...
Computer Command Control, I also dont have a computer...

any help on where i can start looking would be greatly appriciated.
TIA
Dennis

do a search for 4-ways and tailights I gave a pretty good description of finding shorts in that thread.

Any luck finding your short? I have (had) the exact same problem you describe. One day no interior lights,- new fuse blew right away. So far I have narrowed it down to the hatch lid release or probably the pull-down motor, because after having the hatch opened and closed again the problem went away.....for now anyway.

I would make sure no wires from unistalled componants have found theyre way to ground. I would also read a resistance measurement across the cig lighter to make sure it isnt shorted out.

Did you check and see if maybe a coin has fallen into the cig outlet?

I didnt check yet about the coin... i will have too.

I put in a 25 amp fuse instead of a 20 and it worked for like 30 min... i turned the car off and came back later... nope it blew. I know i know i shouldnt have done it...

How do i read a resistense measurment across the cig lighter?? as in, where do i measure it?? What part of the lighter?

I'm having the same problem with my 92 RS,although I think mine is related to the car alarm. I noticed the interior lights were out when I got to work. The lights were on when I left the house. When I got home I found a 25 amp fuse in place of the 20 amp that should be there burned out. I replaced it with a 20 amp and it worked for two days, and then again it burned out. The Alarm has been acting up and I plan to disconnect it and see if the problem stops. I have only had the car since the end of November, so not a lot of history. When I bought it the dome light was missing. I put one in and had no problem with anything until now. Any ideas ????

Take a halogen lamp and connect the two wires to where the fuse goes in the fuse box. This is going to act like a load tester. Now, take an amp clamp(small one) and go around the wires in the light circuit looking for higher than normal amperage. This is the easiest way to find a dead short. Good luck.

Just take the cig. ligther out and unplug it and see if stops doing it. The cig lighter on these cars are know to go bad and cause these problems

Excellent advice. You can also start disconnecting parts of the harness. When the light goes out you have your "unauthorized" ground.

Exactly. You can also measure resistance across the two wires. It should read an open circuit. Other wise your cig lighter is shorted and blowing the fuse.

Re: Please help me find why my fuse keeps blowing

ok i just bought my camaro a few days ago and im having the same problem...i noticed the locks didnt work so i put in the fuse and it worked for a while then a few days later went out again put in another fuse and then blew out again today...like when u put the fuse in the slot you see a spark as the blades touch and enter. check over the radio wires and i cant see anything...the cig lighter works fine but could this still be the thing shorting out the hold setup?

also im pretty good with electronics and stuff so not a noob in that area but i just need a little more explanation on how to do the test where i plug the tester in and then check each part of the circut (power locks, rear hatch, interior lights, cig lighter, command center etc..)
