Hatch Release Not Working

If pressing the hatch release switch on my '92 TA does nothing i.e. the hatch motor does not engage, is the first thing to check the switch or the motor i.e. which is the more likely culprit, or is it impossible to say?

On the 92 I believe the power goes direct to the hatch motor, the switch completes the grounding circuit. Does the car have a rear light for the hatch area, and does it work? Same power feed. Look for a hatch or lid fuse blown. Not much help I know, sorry.

Another thing to check that has been happening a lot here lately is a blown CTSY fuse
