Check Engine Light after 25 minutes of highway driving...

For future reference: Do you guys call it the Check Engine or Service Engine Soon light?

So my dads 90 suburban 350 TBI and my 87 350 TPI Both have the exact same problem. Drive fine around town, but after 30 minutes on the highway the light comes on out of nowhere.

Temp is fine. Dont have an oil pressure gauge. Is there a dummy light for low oil pressure?

Is there a way to check engine codes on these cars without a code reader? On my 87 Jimmy we used paperclips for jumpers and watched the light blink...

If theres a FAQ on all this stuff please someone forward it to me. thanks!

DISPLAYING THE TROUBLE CODES
Run a wire/hairpin from Pin 6 to Pin 12 with the ignition off (although on later cars it should be from Pin 5 to Pin 6), then turning the ignition to the on position without starting the engine will flash the "Service Engine Soon" light in the following sequence: flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause Following this "12" code repeating three times will come any trouble codes stored, flashing each of them three times. If you do not see the "12" flash three times, your diagnostic circuit is defective.
Some vehicles will display stored trouble codes, then "12" again, followed by energizing "most system controlled relays." The fuel pump relay will not energize. The idle air control valve will fully extend to enable checking minimum idle speed.

CLEARING THE TROUBLE CODES
Turn the keyswitch to the off position. To clear any trouble codes, disconnect the power feed for 30 seconds. If this is done at the battery, and your car stereo is equipped and programmed with a four digit pin code, you may have to re-enter that as well to use your stereo again. A better place to remove power is at the fuse.

I have the same problem. Did you find out what the problem is???

Also, where is the connector panel? In my shop manual it says under the dash on the drivers side but I dont see a panel there. My car is a '91 so maybe they changed it but I can't seem to find it.

Next to the fuse block

EDIT: The door is in the drivers plastic kick panel on the left. It should say fuse panel or something like that.

My car dose the same thing. Hooked a scaner up to it and pulled the code for the egr. Adam :-)

I ended up changing the O2 sensor and it hasnt thrown a code since so hopefully thats all it was. If it does it again Ill scan it.

Just as an FYI the Newer 90-92 ADL connector is is not in the same place as the older 3rd gens it is more towards the middle by the column

Yeah mine ended up being on the left side just behind the fuses. I couldn't find it before because the old owner had wire tied the fuse box cover over it because the cover had cracked.

changed out the O2 sensor. Now its giving me codes 21 and 32. TPS and EGR. Im going to go and take a look at the plug/wiring on the TPS. Where do i start with the EGR valve? thanks

Where exactly is the EGR valve located on an 88 TPI car?
Is there a few different types of EGR valves?
Im guessing its black plastic, bolted onto the intake with a vac line coming off of it?
Will i have to take the plenum off to get at/inspect it? thanks again!

87-89 350 TPI 85-86 305 TPI EGR Valve

That is a picture of your EGR valve. To test if it is physically functional, let the engine warm up and idle. The silver part with the little vac line will be on top. Reach up under the silver part, there will be a diaphram you can push up on. The diaphram should move and the engine should almost stall.
