Low beams suck

I don't know if it is just my car or if its common to our cars, but my low beams SUCK. My high beams however, are some of the brightest I've ever seen in any car. There are a lot of deer here so I have to be careful, which means driving around with my high beams on all the time. This really irritates other drivers though, anyone know of some top notch replacement low beams? I've seen some bright aftermarket headlights for 4th gens, I hope someone makes some better than OEM lights for a thirdgen.

Ive heard the same about the Silverstars. I too would like to know the part number. Is it the same 4556 or whatever it is?

Ive heard some good things about the Phillips Blue Vision as well. Im actually torn between which ones I should get. The Phillips are 10 bucks cheaper per light too. Anyone have the Phillips that like/dont like?

I have Sylvania Silverstars on all 3 of my vehicles. It's an amazing difference between regular Sylvania halogens and these. It's not they are high output lights it's the color tempature that makes the difference. The Silverstarts are in a higher tempature range which amounts to a whiter light. They are the same parts numbers but with an ST on the end and they are generally in a solid white box. This benefits you in seeing more clearly at night, and especially rain.Go to Sylvania's website and it explains the differences. And it gives the full line of Silverstars.

OSRAM SYLVANIA - E-Catalog

The lights are 1.5 to 2 times the price of Sylvania's standard halogens but IMHO they are well worth it.One thing to watch is Pepboys is generally less expensive than evertone else on them. And about once a month they have a coupon to go with it.And Sylvania almost always has rebate offers on them.Advance/Parts America/Kragens and Auto Zone runs similar offers every so often.

Another upgrade that will greatly benefit your headlights is the headlight tech article.Taking the load off the headlight switch makes a very noticeable difference in light brightness.Plus the headlight switch will last longer as it only has to actuate the relays.

Re: Low beams suck

i just installed the silverstars they are a little better but still can barly see with low beams..i to also have a lot of deer up here in the NW...compared to other cars on the road it looks as if my headlights are not even on...they are properly adjusted...is there a low beam relay? maybe its shot or the wiring for the headlights really suck and do not provide enough power but i dont see how that can be considering my highbeams are just awesome...

Re: Low beams suck

Bought new headlights for my 91'Bird, replaced both... Still had dim drivers side with new lights! took back apart and cleaned inside the harness really good with small screwdriver and sandpaper. World of a difference after I cleaned up the metal connections....

Re: Low beams suck

Heres what i did to fix up my head lights. First i switched over to halogens i used a "standard" appearing headlight bucket from year one so that even though i was running h4s it still looked like i was running old sealed beam headlights. Second obviously with this swap i used realys which apparently reduced the voltage drop you normally have running through the headlight switch ect. Third and probably most importantly i changed the set up so instead of haveing 1 set dual element hi/low beam headlights and one set of just high beam headlights i converted all 4 headlights to dual hi/low beam elements. Between all that it was a pretty significant improvement in lighing and i didnt sacrafice that stock apperance and didnt have to buy the hyper expencive silverstars i just used regular old standard walmart h4 halogens. In total it cost about $80 for the h4s the headlights buckets the relays and all the other things like wires (includeing 4 new connectors for the headlights) and convoluted tubeing ect. Not only is it brighter but its always bugged me to have only 2 headlights running on low beams as if the other two are just burnt out or something so it just looks better to have all 4 on.

Re: Low beams suck

I agree with Rolling Thunder 100%, upgrading the headlight wiring is a must. Cheby pinched the penny on this and used a small wire for the headlights, creating a big voltage drop across the wiring.
For maybe $20 total in wires, fuses and relays, you can do this in one afternoon and be very happy with the result.
There is a big writeup on it here on TGO, I'd just search for it.
I have a video that shows the light difference between the stock wiring and relay bypass.

No, I am NOT flashing high beams in this video, merely bypassing the stock Cheby wiring, on & off.

Hope this helps.

Re: Low beams suck

maybe cheby should have hired a few more Amishmen to make their wires. know how wire was invented? it was invented by two Amish fighting over a penney, and subsquently streching it in to wire?
