Problem with Voltmeter!!!!!
Problem with Voltmeter!!!!!
Hello All! First of all I would just like to say that this web site rocks! I have allready worked out a few of the minor querks on my newly purchased 1987 IROC!!! Thanks to all who have helped!! Now on to my question......
Since the very first drive in my new ride, I have noticed that the voltmeter on the instrument panal (when the car is running), allways reads as high as it can possibly go! Even way past what shows as red line!!! When I turn the car off, it goes right back down. I have tested the battery with the car running, and am getting the right voltage there! I am not sure if that is the only thing I am supposed to check or not? Is this just a faulty guage? If not, what could it be? Is there somewhere else that I should be checking for unusual voltage? Nothing seems to run weird in the car..ie. lights, radio, etc...? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Jeremy

man check the voltagem at the alt. and battery with the car in idle....
turn on everything and see if still all the way up....(ac, fan, lights, wipers, radio, lighter, frying pan (sorry for this last one)....if stiil over the 13.5...14 you can have the regulator of the altenator bad or just the gage....
Now check everything with the voltimeter at the hood and after with everything on.....
take care

the gauges ar hooribly inacurate. try replacing the gauge. mine was reading low(like less than 12 volts and i was freaking out like my charging system was seriously messed) and than i pilfered a couple of gauges from the yard and installed them and it now reads correctly.
Thanks guys! Yeah, I know about the horrible guages in these things, but would it be so off that it woudl be pegged way past the red? The battery reads fine in idle, even with other stuff running?

its possible. also make sure when testing the batteries in our cars that you put the leads behind the boots. if you just touch them to the battery terminal stids you will get a false reading. i dont know the exact reason why but this is the case.
as for the gauges a broken gauge can do many things. from reading wrong to not reading at all to intermitten reading and even to reading max. i know in my 91 rs when the gauge sending unit was busted and it always read waaaay over full exept wehen i was low on gass abnd turning right or backing up rapidly , than it would read empty.(dont know how this helps you though lol. just thought id throw it in here so you can take what you will from it). i would just replace it. the most itll cost you is like 10 bucks and mmaybe 30 minutes of your time. and besides the sensor that tells the gauge what the voltage is is in the bgauge itself so tyhat could also be faulty.

yep I have this same problem, voltage gauge pegged all the time. Trickster just told me straight up to replace the gauge, which I haven't gotten around to yet. Nothing else is wrong with my car either.
