alternator over charging

anyone know what inside the atlernator would cause it to overcharge? my gauge keeps reading right at 18 volts and once the car warms up it starts to run like crap....i mean it starts popping out the intake and backfires...but when it's cold it runs fine....

First step is to verify the gauge reading with a multimeter. If it is still reading high, the regulator is either not working or wired incorrectly.
Hey can you do me a quick favor? Which wire goes to which plug in terminal on your alternator? I took both of mine apart at once and i'm not sure I put it back correctly.

thanks man...it most likely is the regulator because i'm pretty sure everythings wired correctly..put i did open the alternator and found that the brushes are worn down pretty far...so idk if that will cause overcharging.....but anyways...idl if the v6 alternator's are like mine but the red goes on the bottom and the black goes on top....
