Post here. VATS is no longer a prohibited topic, and technical information is available on the site. Hopefully, we'll be able to share what we know and have learned to maintain and repair our systems.

Heres my experiance and what I learned from the Horrible V.A.T.S. system


If you ever decide to change your lock cylinder, and try to start your car and it doesnt work, AND YOU have already bypassed the VATS system with a resistor/s and your car does not start Pull out the ECU from underneath the dashpanel on your passangers side and take out the chip inside the computer box, and HAVE ONE BURNED it should have VATS removed!!!!!! you can contact 83z28camaro (Mike) once you recieve the chip and pay mike, you will then need to bypass the starter relay, you will need to cut the TAN or (1991 AUTO +Camaros)Green/Turqouise Wire from the TRANSMISSION gear selector and cut the yellow thick wire coming down from the steering column should be yellow or light yellow (NOT THE AIRBAG WIRE that one has a yellow JACKET) so you then cut that wire and make sure you cut them enough to where you can connect both wires, because they will need to be connected, you could either connect them by tieing them together or use a butt connecter. Start her up and she should run back to the way you had her before this whole VATS problem.

I've been having this problem and it's driving me crazy now. There is no reason the car shouldn't run, and I can't figure it out. My next step is getting VATS burned out of my chip...

I bypassed it with the module from eckler's for the key... the car will fire right up, idle for about 3-4 seconds and then just die as if it's not getting enough fuel. Is there a way I can bypass the fuel somehow so that it works without VATS? Or could it be a more simple problem? The car will not start with the key, I have a push start wired down to the starter, it's a manual transmission. Do I have to jumper the starter relay?

gee vader... first reply to your VATS thread is someone saying to get rid of it.


probly not today, but sometime, i'll search under my own name and condense everything ive typed up so far into a FAQ or something.... unless someone wants to do that for me......

One thing I can share is that most ACE hardware stores can make the VATS keys, and the cost is significantly lower than the dealer or a locksmith - mine were $19.99. They have a box that they stick your original key into and turn, it lights up the resistor code, and they then choose the appropriate key. Given this system, and the way the box works (the resistors are inline from lowest to highest), you could in theory get a key made without having the original, as long as you knew the resistance and which chip (1-13) that was. To each his own. It is still a viable system. It wsa good enough for GM to continue using at least through 2001. The new PASSLock systems are only slightly different, when it comes right down to the basic scheme.

The intent was to help owners maintain their systems, but if someone simply wants to remove it, the information can be sued to help with that, too. Just make sure you call your insurance agent so that he can drop your "theft deterrent" discount.
