Ignition system dead. Cranks. Components all good
The car shut off sitting in traffic an hour from home, so I had it towed to a shop nearby.
The fuel pump wasn't coming on when I turned the key, yet it didn't act like it ran out of gas. They tested the pressure and it was about 10, so they did the fuel pump.
It still wouldn't start and then we all realized it had no spark. They've been trying to figure it out for a week now.
They said the ECM, pickup coil, module, ign coil, ign switch are good. I don't know what other components might be part of that system, but I guess they've checked them, because they said they're going wire to wire now.
Anyway, I've given up hope of them finding the problem, so I'm having the car towed home tomorrow. (insurance pays for towing)
I'll be testing all the components or replacing them myself, and re-run wires if I have to.
Are there any sensors that will keep the ign system from having spark? It still cranks.
The car is an 89 2.8 auto.

A couple of things. Make sure you have got good fuel pressure - easy enough to check with FP gauge. Next, look at diagram below for wiring help. Coil gets it's power from the ign switch - follow the pink wire back to ign switch. First, I hope it's this simple, but check all your fuses. You'll never get fire w/o power to your coil.
Post back with your findings.

Well, I'll find out tomorrow morning or noonish if they've figured it out yet. I called this morning and said they should double check the ign switch, because that's what's looking like the culprit to me anyway. Unless there's a faulty wire somewhere.
The fuel pressure is good. It tested at 42 after they replaced the pump.
It just drives me nuts because it's an hour away, and it seems so straight-forward in some ways. Ign coil, pickup coil, module, ign switch, fuses or a wire somewhere. The fuses were the first thing I checked too on the side of the road.
My old beater 66nova 2dr post 230 sick cylinder isn't doing to well either, and isn't cutting it as a 2nd car now that there's a pulsating/grinding vibration/sound that varies in intensity while driving.

And a good thought at that, I was just going to mention it. I had this problem a year ago and it turned out that 20 amp fuse blew and I found the reason it blew to be cause of the oil pressure/fuel pump hot wire near the distribotr was worn throgh and shorting on the block.
