Wiring Problem

Hi,
I have an unusual problem with my 1982 Z28 and if anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. I didn't do anything to this car other than let it sit too long. I destroyed the engine and replaced it after 4 years then I charged the battery and it had shorted internally and reversed polarity. I replaced the battery started the new engine. The problem is there is a large draw on the alternator so large that the belt squeels and the pulley gets super hot. I unplug the lead to the alternator and it stops but also quits charging the battery. The wires are not hot coming off the alternator but it smells like something is very hot to the point of melting wires? I replaced the alternator and same thing. I may have crushed something putting the engine back in but I can't find anything. I am open to any suggestion. Thanks in advance. If you want to email me direct do so at russ@christyandmain.com
Thanks

Do you have your alternator properly grounded? (through the engine bracket?) Do you have the positive cable going to the alternator? Is that cable worn or damaged in anyway, properly ohmed out, good terminals? What gage is your cable, I run 2 gage for my 140A alternator. I think stock is 6. Good luck!

No matter what: the belt should not slip (squeel): tighten it and go from there!
