Removing needle from speedometer

Is there a sure fire way to remove the needle from the speedometer? I need to fix/replace the odometer / trip meter and I need to remove the needle first. All of the ones I've found at the junk without the needle were broken off. IE: the pin the needle mates with were snapped off. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

You shouldn't need to take the needle off to get the odometer apart.

Well I have one without a needle and I need to take the faceplate off to get to odometer. Is the center hole large enough to slide over and around the needle? If so then no problem.
Thanks
