If the other brake lights work then he might want to look at the brake switch on the brake pedal. It has two seperate circuits, one for the regular brake lights and one for the third brake light. BTW, I wonder if he is checking them with the hatch open.

86 had the high mount on the exterior of the glass IIRC... which is foggy at best, lol.
I thought the wiring to those ran up top like the 91-2 instead of through the contacts at the hatch latch ?

Actually, the 86 models had them in the spoiler as well as mounted on the top of the hatch glass. Wonder which one he has. And you are correct about how the wiring for the light on the hatch glass goes.

I'd guess hatch alignment. On my 86, there was this little black piece of plastic with metal tabs on it (it was on the bottom of the decklid) that met with a brass piece on the rear plastics (where the hatch motor is)- when you close the lid of the trunk it lines up and transfers power to the brake light. Make sure it's making a good solid connection.

I have an early '87 with the '86 style brake light on top of the hatch(ugh!). I never knew some of the '86 cars got the spoiler brake light?
