Replace fog light bulbs

I have a 87 IROC with the orginal fog lights. I have tried to get them to light up but I am having no luck. What do I need to check and how do you remove and replace the bulbs in them?

Removing the bulbs is pretty basic, there should be a screw on each side of the housing that will allow you to remove the lens. May also want to make sure you've got power to the fog light relay and it's sending 12 volts to the bulbs.

If you have to purchase replacement bulbs (and your lenses are old, yellowed and scratched) you may want to consider buying the aftermarket fog light kit from AZ or the equivalent. For around $18-20 you can get new reflectors, lenses and lamps that will swap right in to your existing housing. Just bring in one of your old lenses to make sure you get the right size. Considering replacment lamps can run $5-8, it's a pretty sweet deal.

It's been awhile since I messed with my fogs, but IIRC, the housing itself is sealed, and the bulb is removed from the rear of the housing. Push in on a clip/tab and twist.

Got mine at Advance Discount, just brought one of mine with me and started hitting all the parts stores. They were $17.99 for the pair, and came in an aftermarket housing (that had to be removed), just had to modify the connectors a little to connect to the halogen. The fogs are now even brighter than the headlamps (my highs don't work), and the clear lense looks much better than stock.

Are the fogs for Camaros and Firebirds the same?

Yes, also the S-10 and a few other vehicles. Like the door handles, GM recycled lots of parts. I found this out here on TGO, a thread from 2000 or something. I think the guy's name who was asking about them was "oneeyedjack". I just didn't want to spend stupid money from GM, iirc their replacement lights (just the glass actually) was over $40 each.

Humm, I was thinking that the IROC fogs are a sealed housing and that no individual parts were replaceable.

I meant the entire housing, although I did notice they are not "sealed". The back stamped steel housing is just glued to the glass with a light adhesive, then tabs bent around the glass. Looks like the tabs held the glass untill the glue was set. A sealed housing means you have to replace the entire unit when the bulb goes bad, similar to most headlamps.

I guess i meant 'sealed' in the sense that no individual parts can be replaced. For example, if the glass is cracked or the bezel rusted, the entire housing must be replaced.

Not if you can get the donor part you need. As far as buying them new, it has to be the entire thing.

Fog Lights

I did manage to remove the bulbs from my fog light and ran a test on them. I am getting power down to the where the bulb connect but they do not light up. I am stuned at this point. Can anybody help me out what do I need to check for? For some reason I can not see the light.

Silly question, but is the headlight switch in the on/parking position when you are turning on the fogs? Check the fuse, and are the bulbs in good condition?

Yes the headlight switch in the on position when I have the fog lights on. I checked the bulbs and they are ok. I will replace the relay to see if that is the problem. Is there a fuse for those fog lights?

Dunno on the Camaro ones, but have you checked to see if they work, whether the headlights are in the high or low position?

GTAs are stock with the fog lights working only with the low beams, not working with the high beams. A simple fix that I took care of. Now, they work regardless of highs or lows!

Yes I did check to see if they worked with the high and low beams on. Nothing. I am thinking that its the relay.

You said you were getting "power down there", this means neither the relay or fuse could be bad.

I'm inferring that you've checked the leads going into the bulbs and found 12 volts hot and the bulbs are still not lighting. Would seem your bulbs are bad or the connection at the bulb(s) is bad. The rest of this talk has me concerned that some physical laws are in danger.
