Speedometer problem

I have a 92 z 28. Recently the speedo has been acting weird. It isn't totally broken it just seems to work when it wants to. Occasionaly it drops to zero for a second of two then works again, or sometimes it just doesn't work for the whole drive. The odometer also has been completely broken for a while. I'm guessing it is just a bad connection of some sort. Should I just start looking through the wires? I tried searching bur havent seen a post were the gauge works most of the time.

Re: Speedometer problem

Intermittent speedo function can be caused by loose connection at the vss on the trans tail housing. Make sure that connection is secure and that the wiring hasnt become frayed, or the insulation skinned off which may cause circuit grounding. If the connection is loose (at the vss), try a zip tie to keep it tight. Hopefully, the vss isnt on it's way out..

Another troublesome area is where the pigtail plugs into the back of the speedo. This connection sometimes come loose or gets jarred if work has been done under the column area. If the first suggestion doesnt help, check the connection at the back of the speedo.

Good luck

Re: Speedometer problem

The speedo on my 91 bird does the same thing pretty frequently. I've found that a good WHACK with the back of my hand between the speedo and tach immediately fixes the problem for the rest of the day (it usually does this in the morning after it's been sitting all night). I know I need to replace the speedo, but it's not real high on my priority list.
