starting problems
starting problems
I have an 86 iroc z 28 camaro with a 305 tuned port injected engine. I cant seem to get it to start everytime. when I turn the ignition, there is nothing, but I have a brand new starter in it. Then, if I wait a little bit, it starts right up. I can manually start it if I open the hood, and use a screw driver to jump the starter, and it does it everytime, but I cant get it to start everytime when I turn the ignition. Any help woudl be greatly appreciated.
Re: starting problems
Might be a starting point, but i would check the ignition switch at the bottom of the steering column. It sounds like it may be loose or out of adjustment. I would check that first.
Do you lose your lights when you turn the key? Interior lights are what i am referring to. If so there may be something else, not real sure. But i would check the ignition switch first.
Maybe someone with more knowledge of this problem will chime in with more advice on what to check.

Re: starting problems
Yeah, I have power to everything, I mean, my headlights turn on, my interior lights turn on, the switch has been replaced before, and the starter is brand new. I have power, just not to the solenoid I guess. I can jump it manually with a screwdriver by connecting the 2 terminals on the starter, but I cant turn it over with the ignition.

Re: starting problems
So your saying the solenoid isnt getting power or it isnt working. you can have your local auto parts store check the started and solenoid. If all thats good, I would definately check the ignition switch. Maybe something is just barely connected.
Re: starting problems
I have rigged it with a button start, until I can figure out exactly what the problem is. the solenoid isnt getting power, so im guessing that it is bad wiring? but im not sure. I cant really get anyoen to come look either, I guess I ahve to get a multimeter and trace it to see if it is bad wiring.

Re: starting problems
I know that I have the exact problem and i traced it to what I believe is a faulty vats module. If I do anything under the hood involving electronics, then the car wont start for 10 minutes or so. It's pretty annoying.
Re: starting problems
What you can do is run a wire from the positive terminal on the solenoid to a wire under the steering column. If you have an 86 iroc z the wire is yellow. it isnt coming directly from the steering column in the rows of wires that are attached side to side, it is in the wiring that is in bunches. the crank wire is yellow and should be in the middle of the bunch. run a wire from that wire, so strip a piece of it, solder it, wrap it with tape, and attach the other side to the solenoid. the crank wire isnt getting its 12v. its an easy way to bypass all the bullshit. thats what I did, it turns over everytime now.
