custom led switches need help big time
ok basically i'm customizing my 1986 trans am dash buttons,
im putting in custom switches and stuff like fog light switches for instance im having issues getting the led indicator on at the same time at the fog lights.
the fog lights work with a simple toggle switch
but only the led lights with the led built in switch
im using a switch with a built in led.
switch has 3 prongs ground load and supply
i have a little electronics background and teh best thing i can come up with is that the led is restricting too much voltage for itself and nothing left for the fog lights.
any suggestions would be great.
same thing with my rear trunk light. simple toggle switch works but throw in a led and only the led works.
any help i'll take
thanks

Re: custom led switches need help big time
Sounds like you are using the wrong prongs. The lighted switches works just like a toggle switch. Leave out the ground and it should deliver power the load just like a normal switch does, with no light. Connect the ground and the light should work. The LED switches can presumably only be used to switch the hot side, not be used as a grounding switch.

To use it as the original switch, connect the existing wires to the supply & load prongs. To add the light function, connect an extra wire from the ground prong to car ground.
If it works but lights up continously, swap the supply & load wires.

Re: custom led switches need help big time
what about if i have a toggle switch and an led on their own and i want to join them to do the same job, which have the led light up with the switch on?
i don't knwo why i'm having so much trouble i guess i jsut expected it to just work. instead i get either the interior light or fog lights on or just an led lit up.
but i will try the 3 prong switches tonight with the tips suggested

Re: custom led switches need help big time
On a side note - you mentioned fog lights ....
Make sure you install a relay on such heavy load applications as fog lights. You do not want to run power from your interior fuse block or junction box directly outside to fog lights - especially through a "made in china" switch or led (what's not made in china these days?). The load will burn up the switch and/or LED, and leave with a smoldering (or worse
) mess inside your car.
Feel free to PM me for help on relay.
