Remove Speedlimiter, did i need new parts?

Hy all,
i have a Trans Am WS6 with a 305 TBI, 1991.

i think my car has a speedlimiter.
so i go often to germany, drive alot at the autobahn, in germany u havnt a speedlimit on autobahn.

i think i have a speedlimiter and i want to remove them.

when i remove the speedlimiter and when i drive more than 1hour faster then 120mph, so i need some new parts? heared i need some new cooling parts for the transmision?

greetings from switzerland.

Yes, all TBI engines have a 110 MPH speed limiter. Sorry I dont know what that is in kilometers.

You need a custom computer chip burned to remove the speed limiter. Hypertech chips and those type of aftermarket chips do not remove the limiter.

thanks kev,
but whats with the other parts? i heared that the transmission only has a little oil reserv and that its not good to drive longer fast, i mean longer drives over 110mph.

Cooling the transmission is always a good idea. Also, check the speed rating on your tires. The speed limiter is there mainly because of the stock tires that came on your Trans Am right out of the factory.

Greetings from California!

No chips, no mods, other than prolonged tranny cooling or higher rated speeds.

A simple toggle switch will eliminate it.

I figured this out years ago, but was too lazy to write it up, so Bradley wrote it up. He detailed it better than I could have anyways.

ah thats a nice howtoo.
So i just must install this toggle switch without other cooling parts? just hearad about the cooling parts...

but i heared that the toggle switch solution is damaging the transmission because some error codes or whatever, or isnit?

I've only done it to T5s. Since it interrupts the signal to the ECM, that is why it won't stop injecting fuel, to limit engine RPM, therefore resulting speed. But the 700R4s are not ECM controlled, I don't see how it could affect an auto tranny. Other than it would with ANY auto tranny...higher rpms, increasing fluid temp.
----------
Oh yeah....The Check Engine light does come on, when the ECM loses the signal, but it went off when the toggle switch was flipped again, restoring the signal to the ECM.

I can see no reason for it to affect the auto, except for higher temps, with prolonged 110+ mph speeds, which would happen with ANY auto tranny.

ah thats fine. Well then i install a toggle switch.

hm whats up with the suspension, some guy from the states told me i should not drive those speed with the stock suspension and the stock brakes.

well my TA has a "WS6 Performance Suspension" so...i not realy must change the suspension?

my TA (from 1991) has only 69'000 miles on it.

Re: Remove Speedlimiter, did i need new parts?

Increased oil capacity (deeper pan) and a cooler, would be my only suggestions.

Auto trannies do like cooler temps!

Yes the auto trans will be affected by removing the speedometer signal. The torque converter lockup is controlled by the computer. Without a speedometer signal the computer will not lock up the torque converter. That will lead to increased transmissions tempuratures and a failure will happen over a period of time. Install a transmission cooler for sure.

The converter will not lock up anyways at full throttle, which is what a driver would be at running top speed, so the lack of torque converter lock up isn't a consideration. Which is why I didn't bother to mention it anyways. Even WITH the signal, the torque converter would remain unlocked.
